Case Western Reserve University: Executive Director
POSITION OBJECTIVE
The Stem Cell (CSCRM) Executive Director for business and operations will have direct responsibilities to both the National Center for Regenerative Medicine (NCRM) and the Center of Stem Cell and Regenerative Medicine (CSCRM). NCRM is a federally funded, multi-institutional organization comprised of Case Western Reserve University, University Hospitals Case Medical Center, and the Cleveland Clinic. CSCRM is a state funded, multi-institutional organization comprised of Case Western Reserve University, University Hospitals Case Medical Center, the Cleveland Clinic, Athersys, Inc. and Ohio State University. The executive director reports to the center director and coordinates with the co-director at the Cleveland Clinic. The executive director develops and executes organizational strategy for the CSCRM and NCRM and provides leadership, academic coordination and operational expertise. Oversee all activities of the CSCRM and NCRM, including research, development, clinical implementation and commercialization, and oversee planning and implementation of programs to achieve goal of overcoming technical barriers to commercialization and job creation. Liaison to the board of directors and executive committees. Develop and implement strategic planning, which will involve Centers expansion and building alliances with industry, research institutions, government and other key partners. Responsible for directing day-to-day administrative, educational, development activities and managing finances and accounting. Coordinate the various oversight committees and direct core administrative activities related to integrated research programs, clinical research, commercialization strategies, meetings, grant submissions, reports, gov't meetings, and training programs. Act as a facilitator and work with diverse groups of people at a broad array of organizations. Guide all human resources-related activities for the staff.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
1. Work closely with the board of directors, the center director and center executive committee to develop long and short-term strategic and administrative plans, identify Center goals and objectives, and develop and implement financial oversight. Develop and prepare reports and analyses to support planning process and monitor implementation. Also assist in the identification of new opportunities for the Center. Anticipate problems and develop solutions. Work closely with government relations staff at each of the partner institutions to identify and secure governmental support for the Center.
2. Responsible for gathering and utilizing market research and competitive intelligence for the Centers' strategic planning. With this support, directly interface with Center leadership to prioritize and plan new strategies to accomplish its missions and goals.
3. Conduct special projects as deemed appropriate by the director and/or executive committee, such as organizing an international meeting.
4. Responsible for facilitating commercial, clinical and economic development with the end result of creating new joint projects, sponsored research, research agreements, and licensing opportunities. This requires coordinated interactions with the Case Technology Transfer Office, Cleveland Clinic Foundation Innovations, economic development organizations (such as BioEnterprise, NorTech, Fund for Our Economic Future, etc.) and associated biotechnology companies.
5. Identify potential university and center researchers and external companies to engage in research partnerships with center members and coordinate the meetings and discussions, and work with the Office of Research Administration on contractual follow-through participate in creating new opportunities for NCRM and CSCRM.
6. Take leadership role in building closer relationships with current NCRM and CSCRM corporate partners. This includes identifying opportunities to expand and/or enhance cooperative projects. corporate personnel, negotiating for new corporate sponsorship, being a resource for the companies, and developing new strategies for collaboration.
7. Promote and support research and clinical programs including state-wide expansion of cell-based therapies consortia and clinical trials infrastructure.
8. Utilize market research on competitors, and industry (includes performing Internet and periodical research such as identifying prospective business opportunities, developing company profiles, creating strategic reports, etc.) to provide context and benchmarking.
9. Synthesizes center, competitor and industry technical and financial intelligence for government relations and political applications to describe current status and formulate recommendations.
10. Work with the marketing and operations manager to administer day to day operations of the centers and of the centers' research groups which will include managing meetings, workshops, the interface with sponsors, and the lines of communication while informing and coordinating with center director
11. Prepare and review fiscal and technical reports for submission to center sponsors. Prepare annual budget forecast for the center. Review, analyze and interpret monthly income and expense statements, make projections for the remainder of the fiscal year. Supervise financial reconciliation and initiate and approve expense transfers when necessary. Coordinate year-end closing process for center, which requires and adjustment of closing income and expense data to ensure compliance with forecast. Analyze budget variances and recommend courses of action to deal with variances. Approve certain center related expenditures and ensure compliance with budget. Develop cost control and monitoring programs and coordinate these activities with partner institutions.
12. Responsible for the quarterly and annual reports submitted to various oversight organizations such as the Ohio Department of Development, government relations, and institutional management. Reports involve significant research on member statistics (intellectual property, publications, grants, press releases, etc), center activities, budget, commercialization activities, and competitive intelligence for benchmarking. Vigilant oversight on gathering information from Case Western Reserve University, University Hospitals Case Medical Center, the Cleveland Clinic, Athersys, Inc. and Ohio State University is necessary to prepare these reports.
13. Responsible for identifying, organizing, preparing, and submitting grant proposals for submission to federal and extramural agencies with center members across all the founding institutions. Grants may entail working with numerous companies and institutions outside of the centers.
14. Responsible for the accounting/financial records for the center by overseeing the duties of the marketing and operations manager and the financial accountant; authorize routine CSCRM expenditures, assist in preparing budgets, and reconcile monthly expenses statements for the center. Of special importance is the creation of the NCRM and CSCRM Annual Reports which will require forecasting, data analysis, and reconciliation of expenditures by the center. These reports will be viewed by the multi-institutional leadership on the board of governors (includes the Provost of Case Western Reserve University, President of University Hospitals Case Medical Center, Chairman at the Cleveland Clinic, and CEO of Athersys), executive committee, and commercialization committee.
15. Contribute to a number of institutional and center programs including participation on committees and strategic meetings to analyze, develop, recommend, and implement new programs for CSCRM and NCRM: preparation for these meetings often include development of reports, proposals, budgets and presentations. All major meetings are multi-institutional so careful attention to sensitive issues is crucial to success.
16. Implement the monthly CSCRM seminar series which promotes collaboration and education of center members from local, national and international speakers. This include identification, invitation, and itinerary creation for invited speakers and ad hoc presenters.
17. Responsible for performing the day-to-day operations as needed by the executive director. Duties include meeting with government officials, reporters, and researchers, handling phone and email communications, coordinating meetings, approving time and work for interns, etc
18. Promote communications between the NCRM, CSCRM, Case Western Reserve University, University Hospitals Case Medical Center, the Cleveland Clinic, Athersys, Inc. and Ohio State University) and external organizations (academic, healthcare, governmental, etc.).
19. Supervise distribution of effort for center director and administrative staff. Directly supervise center's administrative and clerical staff at the university. Deal with employee related issues, oversee record keeping for attendance and maintain personnel files for all center employees. Supervise reconciliation of monthly effort. Initiate and approve salary transfers when necessary.
20. Direct all marketing activities and outreach programs for the center, including public relations, publications, branding, promotion, identity and web sites. Work closely with the media and marketing representatives of the center partner institutions to ensure valuable coverage of center activities. Support, promote and advocate all services offered by the center to its partner institutions, researchers and to outside industrial collaborators. Develop and maintain content of multiple web presences (NCRM, CSCRM, BioSpace, and annual meeting).
21. In coordination with partner institutions, manage outreach programs with various community groups and organizations, as well as meetings, workshops and short courses for the center. Determine scope and approach of outreach programs and be responsible for outreach program cost accounting and funding.
22. Responsible for marketing materials, advertisements, and negotiating with publishers to promote the centers as hubs for stem cell and regenerative medicine research.
23. Responsible for working with institutional marketing and communications groups to generate external communication pieces including press releases, newsletters and fact sheets for NCRM and CSCRM; this includes gaining multi-institutional approval for submission.
24. Responsible for identifying conferences that the center leadership should attend and participate. The executive director may represent the center at these conferences, identify leads, and avenues for potential collaborations
25. Develop, facilitate, and implement innovative educational programs to train the local workforce in stem cell technologies and to provide educational resources for the public. This will include presenting to school groups, writing grants to support education, providing speakers for educational events, and preparing educational materials to be used in print, electronic and museum formats.
26. Function as information resource for individuals interested in participating in cellular therapies clinical trials and the public in locating and understanding beneficial clinical trials at the center as well as outside the center in a wide range of therapeutic areas by creating non-technical, thorough utilizing center-generated reports and responding to inquiries by phone and/or e-mail.
27. Work with institutional and school development offices to formulate and implement philanthropic development plan.
28. Participate in the development of proposals to outside sponsors, generally in collaboration with partner institutions. Proposals usually include administrative, research and clinical program and financial components. Supervise preparation of budgets, other fiscal and administrative components and obtain institutional approvals.
29. Function as a technical and business resource for center director and center staff on financial, university and sponsor policy issues. Provide leadership, advice and guidance regarding financial and administrative policies and procedures. Serve as the center's resource for internal and external (sponsor) policies and procedures.
NON-ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
1. Attend professional meetings in the area of stem cell research and regenerative medicine to increase awareness of research trends and directions
2. Participate in educational programs to strengthen administrative skills
CONTACTS
Department: Daily contacts with the board of directors and center director, co-director to develop and execute organizational strategy. Daily contact with center director and research and clerical staff, students and key representatives of partner institutions to direct efforts and to resolve operations-related matters.
University: Daily contact with the Case and partner institutions' research administration, grants accounting, and technology transfer staff to direct efforts, discuss projects, coordinate activities, process and resolve questions. Regular contact with staff in various central administration offices such as Purchasing, Payroll, HR, Media Relations, Development, Government Relations at Case and partner institutions to direct efforts, provide and request information and to coordinate activities.
External: Frequent contact with partner institutions (Cleveland Clinic, University Hospitals, Athersys, Ohio State University), industry and non-for-profit representatives, government officials, outreach program agencies and organizations. Regular contact with outside funding agencies and organizations including the State of Ohio to discuss or deal with issues relating to current or potential funded projects. Routine contact with business facilitating organizations such as BioEnterprise, NorTech, BioOhio, etc. Regular contact with media representatives (print and electronic reporters, writers, etc.)

QUALIFICATIONS
Experience: 5 years progressively responsible experience in research administration and/or business and financial management, preferably in academic and commercial settings. Marketing and program management and business experience a plus. Knowledge of accounting and budget management. Experience in proposal development, long-range strategic planning, grants and contracts administration.
Education: Master's degree in biomedical science required. Doctoral degree in biomedical science and Master's degree in business administration a plus.

GENERAL SUMMARY:
Juventas Therapeutics is a venture-backed, clinical-stage biotechnology company developing novel therapies for treatment of a cardiovascular disease. The Project Manager will play an integral role in managing day-to-day operations related to Juventas’ product development programs. Preferred candidate will have been directly involved with developing clinical stage products with experience starting and supporting clinical trials at various stages. Expertise in transitioning products to the clinic and interacting with the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is a plus. Adaptability and comfort working in a fast-moving, highly-dynamic start-up environment are a must.
Highly developed interpersonal written and oral communication skills, attention to details, and effective computer skills are required. The successful candidate will be highly organized and capable of working within a team to assure assignments are completed on time. Key responsibilities will include serving as a liaison between the company and investigational sites, vendors and contract organizations to ensure that programs are progressing along projected timelines. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Education, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
The successful candidate at a minimum must have bachelor’s or master’s degree in a science-related discipline. The proper candidate will have strong therapeutic product development experience preferably in the area of transitioning technologies into early stage clinical trials. Strong technical writing skills are a must and experience working with the FDA on therapeutic product approvals is preferred. The proper candidate will be a self-starter and willing to work in a dynamic, high-paced start-up environment.
Required Length and Type of Experience
The successful candidate will have minimum of 3 years experience working at a biotechnology or pharmaceutical company having developed products for clinical trials. Experience in gene therapy, biologics and/or cardiovascular product development a plus. Must have experience in organizing, summarizing, and communicating scientific results through publication or engagement with the FDA. Experience with negotiating or managing contracts with contract vendors is a plus.
PRINCIPLE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Position Objective
We seek a post doctoral research scientist/engineer to work on a NIH funded research project concerned with the directed differentiation of embryonic stem cells into endothelial cells for applications in tissue engineering vasculogenesis/angiogenesis. This research involves creation of novel reporter/selection genetic constructs, generation of stable embryonic stem cell lines, differentiation to endothelial cells and characterization, as well as implantation into animal models. An ideal candidate will have experience in stem cell culture and differentiation, particularly to endothelial cells; endothelial cell characterization; and basic molecular biology techniques (e.g. cloning, PCR, Western, immunohistochemistry, etc.).

A post-doctoral fellowship position is currently available to participate in ongoing research to develop cell therapy for cardiac arrhythmias (sudden cardiac death). This exciting new field has the potential to revolutionize treatment and provide a cure for heart disease. Ideal candidates will have a strong background in stem cell biology or cardiac electrophysiology.
Qualifications:
MD or PhD with an emphasis in biology, medical sciences, or chemistry is required. Previous experience with chronic animal models, laboratory equipment, and basic laboratory skills is required. Experience in cardiac physiology is required. A track record of publications in PubMed-indexed journals is desirable.
